I think any weapon is legal for grouse...at least it used to be.  I used to try to take the heads off of blue grouse with my 44 super blackhawk, and my .06... when it didn't work out there wasn't much left.

Whatever gun/rock/stick you can grab when you see em works for me :chuckle:. I shot my first one with a single shot 20. Since then I usually use a .22 or 12 gauge but have also taken some with rocks and my .280 when deer hunting was just hunting and I needed a little shooting. Tough part of larger caliber is ensuring a good backstop and a glancing blow or head shot, a direct hit ruins the best camp meat ever.

great tip-- when shooting grouse on a old gravel road using a high power rifle.  Aim a foot or two infront of the bird.  The gravel will spray the bird and you can run up and grab it.

I always just shoot the head off. The trick is, if they are really close, you need to remember a scoped rifle will always shoot LOW. So aim a little high. I usually aim at the top of the head and a lot of times it will hit at the base of the neck. Perfect!   :chuckle:

Got a limit bow hunting in the Pasayten one time with a stick, could have got more. A bunch flew up into thick trees and I just went in under them with a 6' stick and wacked them, they where young but they tasted good. It was almost like if I cant see you, you cant see me. Good dinner on an overnight pack in.

If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

My brother got a limit of spruce grouse in the Pasayten with a sling shot. We also enjoyed grouse for dinner that night, along with the chicken/rice Mountain House.

With a dog, I use a 16ga., 20ga. or 28ga. SXS with IC/modified chokes; very fun to shoot on the wing after the flush from Chesapeake.

I've got the same gun as iceman in the same calibers...i've used my bow(tried) and also a browning gold 12 gauge.
there is a max. caliber that can be used for grouse i think. i believe shooting them with your deer rifle for example or with a 44 mag is illegal, but can't verify it here at work.
i might be wrong.

Yep.

May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Forest Grouse
Forest grouse may not be killed with
any rifle or handgun 24 caliber or
larger, or shotgun containing slugs or
buckshot, during modern firearm deer
or elk seasons unless appropriate
deer or elk tags are in the hunter's
possession. Forest grouse may be
taken with shotguns as well as firearms
smaller than 24 caliber during
the entire grouse hunting season.

 Taken from the 2008 regs.

My favorite is a .22 handgun. Preferably my Ruger 22/45.
