New Canon Lens
« on: February 18, 2009, 08:45:58 PM »
I'm so excited!!!!  I just won a new Canon lens on eBay and can't wait to get it. I have been bidding for a few months now on a particular model lens that just keeps getting a tad too expensive to justify. Tonight someone put won up for bid 5 minutes before I checked and not knowing what they were selling put a ridiculously low "buy it now" on it. I scooped it up and paid right away :IBCOOL:

I will post picks of it when it arrives, I cant wait!!!

Very nice.  I have been looking at the "off" brands like Rokker and Minolta and trying to decide if it is worth the trouble of figuring how to mount them to the Canon.  I need a lens like that for the kids photos, to justify to my wife why I bought an expensive camera.  Of course the real reason is to be out in the woods with the camera.

Well at 55mm I wont be taking many outdoor shots with it unless its flora or close critters. Its will mainly be used for home type pics, the beauty is I can shoot fast shutter speeds at very low light without a flash. Pope has one of these lenses and when he showed me its capabilties while moose hunting I knew I had to have one. The focal length on it is amazing as well, maybe we could get Pope to post a couple pics with his on here to show an example? ;)

F1.2 is kind of dreamy.  It gives that soft shallow depth of field that great people photos turn out well with.  This is the type of lens where you shoot a photo of someone and their eyes are infocus but the tip of their nose is blurry.  The depth of field is that shallow.  You can shoot this thing at night on iso 3200 and get results.  Here are some samples.

Yes and no Bone.  It was amazing before I ground down the mount for infinity focus.  I lost close close macro focus when i did it but I gained infinity focus.  I should have two of them, one for macro and one for infinity focus.

Thats the one although there has been a slight problem. After I won the bid I promptly paid with PayPal and expected everything to go smoothly. Well last night my wife tells me she recieved a notice from PayPal saying we had a payment. I logged on to check and sure enough the money I had paid had been refunded along with a nice little apology that she decided not to sell it. Seems she realized they were going for more than she put the buy it now at. I realize this is against eBay policy and I have a legit bitch but let me finish the story. I then got on and checked for another lens that had been put up, which was ending two hours later. Long story short I won that auction as well and should have a lens soon anyway.

Yeah, asking Pope for lens advice gets expensive.  Everytime he gives me a suggestion I know its gonna cost me at least a grand.   :'(  But I guess you can't put a price on quality.  That's the line I give my wife anyway.

Not only that but its expensive to get into it, just like everything, but once you have the gear its relatively cheap.

Tell me about it.  I have been tracking my UPS shipment and most everything will be here by the fourth.  I shouldn't have been such a cheap ass and just did second day air for an extra $30 bucks.

I have a budget just like you guys so I know how you feel tbrad.  I still need to purchase a 400mm f4 DO.  I think the race is on between a few of us to get one first.  I can tell you I don't think it's going to be this year for me.  With my wife being unemployed, a desire to get my truck paid off, and roth ira's it is not looking good.  At least business has been good.   :twocents:

Yeah my money is on Rob getting the 400mm first.  Then renting it out to the rest of us he'll have it paid off in a year.  I hope you know I wasn't complaining just teasing you a bit.

I had an idea for a good spacer instead of using blue plastic like I did phool...  Get the perfect sized black o-ring.  Or you can have one machined and paint it to match.
