Shed hunting near the Arizona/Utah border
« on: February 28, 2017, 10:08:12 AM »
My wife is trying to talk me into flying into Las Vegas, renting a car, and spending a week taking a road trip around the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park at the end of March.  I'm not as excited as she is about it but if I knew of a place to spend part of a day hiking/shed hunting in that general vicinity it might help convince me.  Being unfamiliar with the area I'm wondering whether anyone would care to share a little intel about a location for that kind of activity.

The plan would be to start in Vegas, travel through Kingman, hit the south rim of the Grand Canyon, go through Page, Zion, St. Gorge, and back to Vegas.

Please share in this topic or via PM if you are so inclined.  Thanks.

I went out looking for sheds with a friend out in the desert to the NW of Kingman, and he found a huge desert ram skull.  That was about 15 years ago, and it was legal to keep them at that time (and maybe it still is, I don't know).  When sheep get sick, they go to the small springs in the desert where they sometimes die and leave behind their bleached bones and skulls.  You might stop by the AZGFD in Kingman and ask about the current laws on that, and inquire as to where is a good place to go to find sheep skulls if it's still legal.

If you've never been down that way, you'll find it's huge country.  No real concentration of wintered deer so I don't think even the locals could tell you where to look for sheds.  That's quite a trip down thru that area and you can spend days just driving and taking pictures.  If you were going a little further east over around the Moab area I could tell you where to go find some great dinosaur tracks.  Nothing like that area up this way, been down there many times but still get overwhelmed every time I go down there.

Its illegal to pick up sheds in Utah until April 1st and after that you have to have a certificate from the state to do so. No joke!
