Second any deer tag
« on: March 06, 2017, 04:08:19 AM »
I am elk hunting in Wyoming this September (I drew my tag) and as it is a long way for me to travel back and forth I was wanting to try to hunt both Whitetail and Mule deer. I have a bunch of preference points which I will use if I really have to, but I would rather keep my points and try to draw region W as a second choice. Where I am located I cannot access the statistics on the G & F website so I wanted to know if I can do that? I am prepared to buy the special if this will help.
My second question is I want to try to buy a leftover area 23 -3 whitetail tag can anyone tell me if that is a probability?

May be a tough tag to fill with the winter kill

I could be wrong but it looks to me like in 2016 your odds to draw region W as a second choice in the "special" draw would have been about 60%. In the regular draw, no chance. With the higher winter kill this year the quota will likely be lower and I'd guess your odds of drawing as a second choice will probably be much less than last year.

As for the 23-3 license I saved the leftover list from last year so I can check that later, and see if there were leftovers last year. But of course that doesn't mean there will be any this year. If you really want to be assured of getting one deer tag, you might just put in for the 23-3 license as a second choice. Looks like you could even save a couple hundred dollars because you could draw it in the regular draw so there's no need to pay extra for the special.

Bobcat, I have 8 deer preference points and would like to hunt either specie of deer, so drawing on your knowledge it doesn't really matter where I hunt deer but preferably mule deer. I am open to suggestions I will bowhunt on public land wherever I need to. I have 2 to 3 weeks to get it done. My research has led me to region W plus I liked the info the biologists and game warden gave me about the region. Hey there could be a much better choice I am definitely open to suggestions - always am.  If I can buy a 23 - 3 as a leftover then great! Thanks for the reply it is appreciated.
