Great salt lake?
« on: February 26, 2017, 04:36:21 PM »
Well looks like I might be moving to Nevada here in the next couple of years. I'm not to happy about it but things happen. Any ways I was thinking if I do end up moving there I'll either hunt ducks in nor cal or over on the great salt lake, probably more than likely the salt lake. My question is do you need a airboat to get to most of the spots? Or will a sled with a jet be good enough? I've been trying to look it up but most everything I've found is a airboat. I want to avoid getting a airboat if I can and stick with a jet. Anyone have any other pointers for hunting there?

Surface drive or longtail are what I've seen. Lots of shallow muddy flats that wouldn't jive with your jet.

So a airboat or something like the mud buddy would be the best?

Grew up  hunting ducks and geese on and around the great salt lake. Everywhere from Brigham City bird refuge on the north to Farmington Bay on the south.  You don't need a boat to get some good shooting but an airboat (we owned one, plus a coot atv) does open more area. A sled won't do you much good as vast area of the shoreline area are just a few inches deep with very sticky deep mud underneath. There are numerous private duck clubs around the lake and some are not outrageously expensive to join or, with a little effort, the public refuges around the lake can be excellent. I've got lots of good memories of chasing around that stinky old lake.

Thanks for the info. I might have to check out a few of those clubs hopefully I can find one that I can afford for a season or two until I figure things out

Not exactly sure yet but looking like Reno area. I know it'll be a long drive to the salt lake but I really don't want anything to do with ca and there refuge systems to hunt. I've got a few friends down there and they hate hunting there

That's really just the Sacramento Valley and south, and that system is nuts.

There's three good federal refuges in the NE corner of CA within about 3.5 hours from Reno. Modoc is all walk-in, open three days a week with no fee. Lower Klamath & Tule Lake are a mix of walk/boat in, open 7/days a week, something like an annual $20 pass which is used on both.

Thanks for the info I'll look into that for sure. Like you guessed my buddies are doing the Sacramento valley stuff. And they are always complaining. It's gonna be a change for me for sure.
