Black smithing
« on: March 10, 2017, 05:26:17 PM »
In the bushcraft thread some people talked about forging their own bush craft tools. I've always been interested in making my own tools. I've started this journey not long ago. I first built a small gas forge but soon learned I needed more.

So I built a bigger torch and then a bigger forge. Scored a peace of railroad track and made it in to an anvil like object.

Been doing a ton of research and practicing what I've learned. Getting closer to my goals of making all my own tools. Assembling the tools needed as I can

Will have some hammers and drifts finished this weekend I hope. Made several chisels and drifts, spring fuller, hold fast, and hot cut this week too. Every thing has been repurposed steel.

Some good skills to have.  Custom 'rustic' items like door handles/cabinet handles sometimes have good sale opportunities.  If you weren't so far away I'd try to convince you that you need a half dozen sections of track for an ore cart.  :chuckle:

Are you planning to keep it real traditional or plan on going to techniques like pattern welding and Damascus?
Quench and tempering?
