Barrel suggestions for .300
« on: March 13, 2017, 12:41:55 AM »
I'm looking for some barrel suggestions for my Ruger mod.70-.338 RUM and my Rem. mod. 700-.300 win mag. Target grade but also want to hunt them,I don't care about weight.
I want fluted S.S and brake.  28" 5 groove.

                                                                                                      THANKS

OK here we go.  This could be an endless discussion over gallons of beer.  The short version is (my opinion) that I would start with names like Douglas, McGowen, Hart, Shilen, Lilja and Bergarra and narrow it down from there to your top 2 then talk to each of those companies.  If you have a public rifle range nearby, talk to some of the gun nuts there and see what they are partial to in any recent builds they have completed.  I am partial to Douglas premium and McGowen.  I have shot rifles with Lilja and Shilen barrels that are top performers too.

Also,
An acquaintance of mine used to build rifles in Colville and now has a shop in Louisiana.

davidchristmangunmaker.com

He builds bean field type rifles, mainly on 700 actions but would be a great source to narrow your search.

Benchmark stainless spiral fluted.  Fantastic folks and a very quality product.  All premium barrels will shoot great if the smith doing the work is competent. As mentioned before get ahold of Mike Johnson at Hells Canyon Armory. His work is as good as any his prices are amazing and he's local Washington boy.

I thought you'd pay a bit more attention to bullet weight, length and barrel twist rate.

smith as in gunsmith.  I assumed you are having this barrel chambered and installed on your action by a gunsmith?  Like I said, gI've MIke Johnson a call and chat with him about what you want.  I promise after you chat with him you will want him doing your gun work. Tell him Karl Blanchard referred you.

Full disclosure though man, Mike is my friend and we hunt together a bit.  Only after he built me a gun and I got to know him though.  He's got the knowledge,  his chambering method is next level, and he's just a solid human. His guns flat shoot too  :chuckle:
