Vortex Viper Question
« on: March 14, 2017, 09:14:10 PM »
Anybody use the 1st focal plane? I haven't had a chance to look through one yet. It would be the 4-16 for hunting.

I have owned both ffp and sfp scopes. Sold my last ffp scope a couple months ago.
They are pretty nice for target shooting but not needed for hunting imo.
Lower power was pretty difficult to use the crosshairs on my 6-24 ffp pst. Had to be around 8-10 power before I felt i could really aim.

This!  I looked through several FFP and was unable to make use of them under 10 power.  The crosshairs are virtually invisible at lower power.
If you aint hunting, you aint livin'

Take a look at both side by side if you can. Ffp are great for holding for windage and elevation corrections because the reticle subtensions are always the same. But for me in a hunting situation I just never saw the benefit in how I use them.

Yeah I figured if I was ordering custom turrets I wouldn't be using the hold over marks anyway, so the ffp probably wouldn't be that big a deal.

Butris is making a hybrid that has the target dot in the sfp and the crosshairs in the ffp which looks interesting.

I think my smart money is on sfp with the turrets.

I'm not into dial twisting or hold overs marks but do have a couple of 6.5-20x40mm Vipers on a couple of target guns they are reliable but not the clearest scope I've owned, not even a close second but out to 300 they work OK.  I've never dealt with any of the higher end Vipers so they could be better in the clarity department.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska
