Looking to buy a new Tacoma Double cab 4X4.  Anyone bought one recently?   Anyone work for a dealer?   I talked to my local dealer and doesn't seem to be much room for price negotiating.  And not much to pick from.  Looking for a Silver or white.  SR5.    Not to interested in TRD options.     Thanks

Brant

Just bought one today.  Been shopping around for almost 2 months.  You wont get a huge break.  However, you can save a few grand by taking your time.  Kind of feel bad.  One dealership I liked the salesperson and they were close.  Sales manager kind of irked me.  Well they call this am when I am getting ready to head to other dealerships.  Offer a little better.  Still I told them to give me their best offer to start with and while attractive I still thought I could do better.  Drove to Toyota of Olympia found one I liked and told the them I was not going to dicker.  Just give me the best deal.  Well, to my surprise they came back with a price below MSRP and a really good finance rate.  A couple of points below what I was offered at others.  Long story short I bought a 2017 for what I was paid for my 2015 that was totaled in December.

If you have good credit and can provide a good trade or cash down your can get a decent deal.
Do not buy gap insurance.  Only two dealer ships respected my request to not offer.  They hold their value way better than anything else.

Take your time and search around.  Yes you will burn some gas and time.  I think I have a total of 6 days into my search (driving and listening to sales pitch,) not counting internet and phone time.  In the end I gained about 5k in the long run.

Looked at fords and chev half tons.  The place I work has chevs, dodge, and fords.  Based on the problems we have I only considered the ford.  They could not come close in price.

I'm going to go drive one today.  Just to get a feel and see if I like it.  I bought a new one in 2005.   1st year of the new body.  Double cab, V6 and the 6 speed manual tranny.   Loved that truck.  It was really fast and had a lot of power for a V6.  Been a huge fan of Toyota's for the last 35 years.   Love their reliability and their resale value.    I have a huge down payment and perfect credit and not  in a big hurry to buy.

Magic Toyota is trying to move vehicles before they remodel. Toyota also has a $1750 rebate right now(at least that was for the rav 4) call 4-5 different dealers and start working it. I got my rav 4 under invoice quite a bit plus the rebate. But I kept letting them try to beat each other on price. Then would call a different dealer telling them I was $1000 lower than I was and seeing there reaction. To try to figure out how low I could go.

The 3.5 is really weak on bottom end power, but good if you rev it up. Make sure you get the transmission TSB updates done to avoid gear hunting when going uphill. Also have them manually check the transmission fluid level, not with the techstream, mine was a quart low and many others were worse off.

Lot of good info on TacomaWorld

Was able to get mine for $4050 off MSRP and another $500 off from military rebate

Bought a new dbl cab TRD back in Dec. 2013 it's been the only Toyota vehicle I've ever owned.  The 4.0 was ehh ok for power when I test drove it so I knew before I ever purchased it it would be getting a TRD supercharger.  Waited till it had about 3000 miles before I had the TRD supercharger installed and it's been all good since.  The supercharger makes a big difference in these 4.0's.  Don't have a lot of miles on it, little over 40K.  At the time when I bought my Taco we also had a superduty 4dr diesel but it just sat and wasn't hardly getting used so I sold it.  Now that I'm down to only having the Taco, there are often times I wished I'd bought a full size 1/2 ton instead of a mid sized.  As long as I driver it normal, even with the supercharger, I can easily get 19MPG with all in town driving and that's probably better than the vast majority of full sizes will do and being a mid size does make it quite a bit easier to get around in for city driving.

My 2006 felt almost fast. You're not going to like the new motor. It's really revy and likes to search for gears and stay at a high rpm.

A thought!
In the counties where license fees spiked people may be reluctant to buy and some dealer may need to move inventory.  May be worth a little exploring.
going to be bummed if you get a screaming deal.  Did not think of until I after.

When did they change motors?  Didn't notice any issues with my 2015 and the 2017 seams about the same.

Really? I had a 2015 TRD Sport 4.0 and have the 2017 TRD OR 3.5, and they're worlds apart. The 4.0 has better bottom end torque, 3.5 has better top end HP. The 4.0 was better at holding a gear than having to downshift one or two gears with headwinds or inclines. And depending on when yours came from the factory it might already have a later transmission update, many haven't had them yet and will go from one gear, say 5th, to 4th, back to 5th, doesn't have the power, back to 4th, and so on.

2015 had the 4.0, 2016+ has the 3.5.

Interesting.  I went from 15 sport to 17 OR.  Maybe in time I will notice.  Could be that I am kind of a grandpa driver or so I have been told.

Maybe you just got a good one. Not everyone is having the same issues, but some are having a lot of problems. I'd suggest having your transmission fluid level checked though, manually. Far too many have been low, including mine. I did get a free 6 year 100,000 bumper to bumper warranty because of it from Toyota

I've put alot of miles on two of them. I seriously thought something was wrong with my buddies truck

It can't pull a hill empty without shifting. A lot.
