26" draw length hunting bow for more speed
« on: March 19, 2017, 08:46:11 AM »
Now shooting a 26" dl, 62lb bow, 400gr arrow at 233fps.
Any recommendations for a second hand bow that will get me more speed?

Just curious, how much more speed do you need?  for hunting?  I ask because my DL is the same.  I only get about 248 fps out of my Insanity (IBO 355), 60# & 424 grn arrow.  You can go up the DW but won't see much speed and will hurt your shoulder in the long run.  It's unfortunate for us short draw.

Good question...I don't know the answer.
I shot an elk this year at 12yds and did not get a pass through from a 400gr FMJ with a SlickTrick 100gr head.
I shot a Bowtech BTX28 in the shop a few weeks ago and if you can believe the chrony, I got 264fps with a 400gr arrow and 26" at 62lb.
That's almost 20% gain and the draw cycle was very manageable.
The only thing between me and that bow is $950.

The ace will get you to 260fps but at a cheaper price too. Step up the arrow weight with it and you'll blow through elk easy.

I have shot many elks and in my experience, if shooting quarter away, I will not get pass thru.  I have no problem getting pass thru broadside at 30 yards.  And I usually shoot my Admiral which is slower than the Insanity.  I learned a long time ago that going heavy is the ticket for my short draw.  Speed doesn't get the penetration for my DL.

Digging up an old thread...
I ended up getting a Bowtech BTX 28 and going with a thumb release I gained an inch of DL. I'm drawing 27", mid sixties DW, and my new arrows, Axis 5mm with Easton 50gr inserts, I'm at 430 grains. The draw cycle is very manageable. I haven't chrono'd but Denton at Rock Creek thinks I'm around 280fps.  Hopefully I'll find out about penetration next weekend.
FYI.
