22 inch barrel for a 270.
« on: February 23, 2009, 09:16:23 PM »
So what do you think is the best grain load for a 22 inch barrel.

Do you think a Muzzle brake would benefit a 22 inch barrel on a small plastic stock?

What do you think would be the effective range?

Im referring to a 270 caliber H&R barrel....?

I have a H&R tamer and found a 270 barrel that will fit the action and am wondering about how well its gonna work? and if i can use regualar 140 grain bullets in it? do you think it will rock my world? do you think a muzzle brrake might benefot the use of the barrel? or keep it the way it is?

guess i should make a custom limbsaver for it and make something happen....

What are your guys opinions on the short barrel and effective ranges and loads?

With most cartridges you lose from 25-50fps per inch of barrel. So your not going to loose much. I currently shot a 21" .270. I think a .270 on that stock will rock your world.

The short barrel will not hunrt anything. You might also look for a stock set for your H&R.

I agree with Matt,

I think the 140's will wake you right up with the rifle. If you reload, I would use some 110 Hornady V-Max bullets, that will make a dandy varmint gun and should shoot very well. The 110 gr Sierra Pro Hunters will do a fine job on deer also. The 110 Sierra's have been doing a great job from the 6.8SPC 16" AR's, it's a proven bullet for deer and you will see better velocity than the 6.8 is showing.
Checkin' wind and makin' smoke.
That's how I roll...

I shoot 140 gr accubonds out of my 22 inch .270. But I use it for deer and elk.

If you are going to use it just for deer, I would shoot federal premium Vital Shock's with the 110gr Barnes Tipped Triple shock X- bullet. Its supposed to leave at about 3400 FPS out of a 24 inch barrel, so around 3300 for a 22 inch. Don't think you need a brake, but how heavy is the gun?

I forgot about the 110's. I used the Sierra on my best WT. worked great. My FIL also uses the Sierra's.

The velocity loss posted is accurate with the same load being used out of different length barrels.  Your other questions are dependant on what your gun likes to shoot.  If you reload by using different powders you should be able to regain what you would lose with an extra 2" of barrel.

:bdid: Your tamer is a sb1 frame or shotgun frame and can NOT handle the higher pressure rounds . Here is some reading on the H&R/NEF rifles. Please be safe.

The one that shoots the best.

No

That's hard to say - don't know what game you will be using it on.

I have seen pictures of deer taken at some very long shots -600+ yds with this cal. and so it will reach out and touch them. But it may not work at that distance for a big bear or Elk.
