Over the past few years, more and more people are applying for deer combo tags. This year they are saying more people applied than licenses available so not quite a guarantee anymore.

Why do you have to apply for an over the counter tag?

non residents have to apply for a deer tag.  If you draw you are allowed to hunt state wide.  It isn't really otc, but there are also limited entry (LE) tags you can apply for so people often refer to the state wide tags as otc.  If that makes sense :chuckle:

Its a misnomer - you apply for deer general season tag - called a "deer combo".  The OTC tag is the left over surplus tags but they go on sale early May and are gone by mid July.

I applied for the deer combo.  I've never hunted in Montana but I've heard it can be phenomenal.  Looking forward to the fall!

Was that a good or bad reaction? If you draw the combo tag that gives you what equates to a multi season deer tag in Washington but with longer overall seasons.

Neither, bandsman. I'm putting in for an antelope tag this year, and from reading the regs, I though I'd be able to buy a B permit for deer to try to fill my freezer. Glad I found out now.

depending on the area, there are multiple doe options available.   Opportunity for multiple does even. Between possible surplus b tags, to otc whitetail tags and also single region whitetail doe tags, the options are bountiful

I completely agree.  Not a single one.  The wolves at the last deer several years ago.  I'm surprised they are still selling deer combo licenses.

While deer numbers were not back to what they were 5-6 yrs ago, the numbers of animals I saw were much improved last yr. I spoke to a butcher last week from Eastern MT & she told me they were having an average to mild winter. Hoping we all draw & have a great 2017!

I have hunted Montana a few times with good success.
All DIY trips for deer and elk.
Three bucks and one bull.
If drawn this year we are going on a drop camp trip.
Should be fun.

For the first time guys, if you get drawn, don't take it for granted. Yes, you'll see deer where ever you go. But in this day and age, do some research and pick a spot, stay with it and enjoy it all. First time I went was 99' and it changed my hunting life. I've applied every year since and will retire there some day. Had one of my best trips ever last year and am banking on going again this year.

You are able to get a deer B tag.  You don't need to have the deer combo to hunt with a B tag.  I'd get it when they become available in June instead of taking the chance that they will be available over the counter at a later date.
