Don't think going to the gym will get you a better work out. I stopped going a year ago. To many distractions, to many muscle heads, waiting for equipment, people are always sick etc..... I can stay more focused training at home , trail running etc. Mix in body weight exercises, burpees, wall sqauts, plank to push up, low plank mnt climber's etc. You get the idea. I get more real world strength from not pushing around a bunch of weights. I still do weight training once a week or so, but everything else mostly combo body weight stuff.

Don't discourage somebody before he even checks it out.

I wouldn't say I'm fat by no means I'm about 5'10" inches at about 180 so a little overweight
It was already said but diet is key! Aside from that stick with a plan and follow it through, figure out the schedule that works for you. Me personally, 3 days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) and I'm there from about 5:45-7am. Other days of the week are for cardio and weekend adventures. At 5'10" 180, doesn't sound like you are at all out of shape, but as most people feel there is some work that can be done to better improve your physique and what it is capable of. Good luck and enjoy it. Don't feel like you have to lift heavy, light weights and more reps/sets work just as well.
