Montana Elk first timer
« on: March 21, 2017, 03:23:50 PM »
I was busy working and didn't get a chance to put in for Montana. If I am looking at purchasing an OTC rifle Elk tag what is the process? is it as simple as rolling up and buying one or do I have to purchase left overs? Not sure exactly. Thanks in advance.

As long as there is quota left and the area you want to hunt doesn't require a special drawing/permit, you can walk up and buy in person.  Pretty easy process.  You can see how many tags are left on the Montana FWP website.  And you won't have to claim weapon choice.

Having grown up in Michigan, that freedom to not have to declare a weapon is still sorely missed.

Ya, they won't sell out; you'll get a tag. If you're interested in a hunt plan that'll increase your odds, send me a PM. I've got a good friend (former MT outfitter) that offers them.

Once the draw is over the leftovers will be for sale. I believe you can purchase online or over the phone. The will probably sell out before the season starts.

They sold out last year and expect to again this year. You can go online and try to get a returned tag, but you have to have fast fingers, last year it took me two tries to get a returned tag, 250 tags went in 3 min. It's doable and I killed a nice 6 point 300 class bull with that tag. They usually start the process close to the opener.
