Backcountry Hunting Gear Shops?
« on: March 23, 2017, 02:28:42 PM »
Mods please remove if this is not appropriate for the board.

Doing a little research for work. Curious what your favorite non-REI type backcountry shops are. Are there any brick and mortar or all they all online? Looking for shops that cater primarily to the backcountry hunt crowd, where a rock climber/backpacker would be second.

It's highly possible they don't exist and everyone uses the REI like stores and/or online shops for their needs.

thanks for the help.

I would say they don't exist in my region.

It is a mixture of hunting stores, such as:

cabelas, sportsman's warehouse, Black sheep, sportco.

mixed with REI, Mountain Gear, etc.  - trekking poles, sleeping pads, tents

But 60-75% of my shopping is direct to the manufacturer
Stone Glacier, Kifaru, Seek Outside, Kuiu, First Light, Minus 33, Kennetrek,

Kelty, REI, and Cabelas are places I have purchases most of my back packing gear.  Coleman also has some goods that can be found at walmart

I don't know of any brick and mortar places but checkout 1shotgear.com. They actually answer the phone if you call and have questions.

Not around here but if you ever find yourself in Anchorage Barneys Sports Chalet is a store that caters to backcountry hunters. A lot of their stuff is geared toward mountain hunting.

Is there a reason you want to steer away from REI?  You won't find camo there but can find most items in an earth tone and their service is excellent.

I already sell to REI and it's related shops, outdoor specialty retail. Trying to find the hunting specialty retail which is new/non-existant outside of places such as Cabela's and Bass Pro.

Sierra Trading Post? They now have brick and mortar stores. One in Silverdale. I have not shopped there (online) in years so not sure if it's what you're looking for.

Black ovis and camo fire sometimes get my business, but generally it's direct to manufacturer.

Are you looking to stay in Washington? When I'm in Montana or North Dakota, I always go to Scheel's. They also have stores through the Midwest, Colorado, Texas, Utah that I know of. Maybe more.

Not at all, entire US is open. Interested in shops that sell backpacking gear but cater to the hunting side more than the hiking side. People that might be interested in carrying tents, sleeping bags/mats.

Not to derail you topic Swanny.... but what do you all think of a store like swanny is asking about in the Bellingham area?  Is the area sustainable to a shop/store like that?

I'd probably drive to it, if it had quality backpack hunting gear with a decent selection.

It's a site for people in retail where they learn about brands the store or company works with and in return get product at discounted prices from the site which is called expertcity.
