Thank you, everyone, for your replies!  The trapper tan is still outside of my price range, so I will plan on giving it away if I am lucky enough to get one.  Perhaps I can trade the hide for a skull cleaning.  :dunno:

Today I picked up a fawn in distress call.  My 3 and 3/4-year-old (he always wants that "3/4" mentioned) was making a bunch of noise with it in the back yard until I noticed that it was just about giving our neighbor's horse a heart attack.

I can't wait to get out in the woods this spring!

BTW: Joel at BRT, great first name!

Check with  Brazier taxidery  The lady's name is dianna   she is in Black Diamond   she may some have ideas for you.  Not sure on the bear but i know she usually does a euro mount in trade for the cape on deer. They did my teeth and claws for a necklace on my bear.  If you do remember to tell them mike sent you.

Nice!

Now that I have a shoulder mount, a few rugs, soon to be full size...I've gone to just tanning with hair on. I have a nice tanned hide of my Alaskan bear draped over a hope chest in my bedroom.

Another option you may have is tubing the bear, something I mentioned in my second book. Basically, your cut would be from back leg heel to anus and the same on the other side, then roll it back to the head peeling as you go. Then you can tan and have it hanging on a nail like a yote hide.

I cant bring myself to leave a bear hide in the wild, I like them too much.

My bear rug cost me $850 and that was last May.  The greatest part was I got it back in 2 1/2 months!  You have a lot of options of what you can do but I think it all depends on the size of the bear.  I saved a couple $$ and did the Euro mount myself.
