Dworshak unit 10A
« on: April 06, 2017, 09:19:13 PM »
Well I finally decided to see how the other side lives and am going on my first out of state trip. Looking at the area on google earth it kind of reminds me of home. Clear cuts and timber.
Was wondering if anyone had any experience in the area or any pointers they'd be willing to share. Yes this is a shameless ask for info for a place I've never been before.

Pm me if your willing to share  . I'll take any info I can get.

Thanks
Dilligaf

Tagging to get back to you later. First call the area bio and ask about winter kill. I've hunted the area quite a bit.

Already done  he said elk made it fine and buy a wolf tag.

Appreciate it.

I hunt whitetails there every year. Haven't hunted elk. Which are you after? Yes, lots of clear cuts just like home. But the clear cuts are bigger and the timber is a lot thicker.

Hunting both deer and elk , I'm forgoing my weyco permit this year. Figured I'd give Rockies a shot.

Elk season closes before the deer hunting gets good. Maybe make two trips. Definitely buy a wolf tag they are cheap. The last two years the hunting pressure has gone up and it seems the deer are either declining or just not showing as much. I go thanksgiving week.

That's the plan . We are going to focus on elk in October but, it's nice to have options tho if a decent buck walks out. I'll have thanksgiving week off as well if I'm still holding a tag.
I'll be sure to bring the rain gear .
Thanks Grundy

Anything you see that isn't a clear cut you can pretty much guarantee that it's going to be extremely thick timber. My experience hunting whitetail there is alot like hunting blacktail on the Westside. But it's definitely a cool hunt during the rut. Learn to rattle and grunt.

Any luck using the rattle bags? As far as terrain goes sounds like I'll be down right comfortable in the area.

I've heard of rattle bags working but since you have so much time find a nice heavy set of brown sheds. Get them from a friend or buy them online. They sound way better. Though the timber can be very thick there are areas where you can see 80-100 yds. Find these areas next to the thick stuff and you'll see deer. How did the bio say the deer did? As said, it can rain a lot. But also be prepared for deep snow and frigid temps in November.
