F150 Help Ignition/safety switch issues
« on: November 02, 2018, 12:51:18 PM »
So my 2011 f150 continues to keep giving!!  LOL.  for the past few months intermittently it will not start.  It is not battery, starter or alternator..  The only way I can finally get it to start is put it in neutral.  When it does finally turnover and start it is in limp mode, the display will not display if in gear and when it goes in gear it still will not engage accelerator..

I got the codes and they point to "transmission" but I had one mechanic look and he said starter safety switch or the main PCIM.  It only happens about once a week and he said he can't tell without it on his scope while it's doing it.  My dilemma: replace starter safety switch and hope it's not PCIM?  Or wait until it's more consistent but risk it finally just not starting period.

Anyone had a similar issue?  I know its a stretch.

They  don’t have neutral safety switches.  Transmission range sensor.
Never heard of a starter safety switch or a Pcim. Maybe a PCM? Almost guarantee it’s not a PCM.

What codes does it have? There would be a p0700 code if it were transmission related but that would only mean there are fault codes stored in the transmission control module that need to be checked.

I admit I'm not up to speed on 2011 f150s, but it seems that they sell NSS for them  :dunno:

Yes Jackelope, PCM not PCIM...  code is P0705.  The guy that looked at it said the sensor or switch that it could be tells PCM that truck is in neutral and it's safe to start.  If sensor is failing, truck does not know transmission in set to park and will not engage PCM to allow it to turn over??  Does that make sense?  He called it neutral safety switch which I found quite a bit of info on, but seems people call the transmission range sensor a neutral safety switch in error?

Either way, seems replacing that is best bet and not likely PCM??

Tomato/tomahto. They call them range sensors or range switches now I guess. I’ve seen them called park neutral position switches too. PNP switch. We both meant the same thing. They’re a little more  complicated than a simple old school neutral safety switch.

If you don’t want to have someone diagnose the problem, it’s probably a safe bet to replace the TRS and see what happens. They’re not very expensive.

Looks like this is pretty easy to replace, just have to make sure it is aligned after install??

Sounds like a similar issue I had but with a F-350, the TRS was just out of alignment on mine really easy fix.
