Turkey opener gameplan breakdown
« on: April 13, 2017, 07:18:24 PM »
My friend and I are new to turkey hunting and inexperienced. We have a private patch of land to hunt south of Spokane at the North end of the Palouse region. We hunted one weekend last year and it was late in the season but we were able to call one in. Didn't end up getting a shot but had a lot of fun. We are going back this weekend for a bit of hunting here is the timeline of the gameplan:

Saturday afternoon- arrival, scout and listen for turkey sounds, maybe try to hunt if they are active and vocal. But mostly listen for roosting spots
Sunday morning- Easter activities with family, no hunting
Sunday afternoon- go to turkey spots and try to call them in until dark
Monday morning- try again to call birds based on roost locations
Monday afternoon- departure

This is obviously a short timeline of hunting, I have a hen and gobbler decoy but I'm not sure how to utilize them or if I should just use the hen or both. Also is calling wise this early in the season? Any tips of how to best utilize this timeline would be appreciated

Last year on opening day I called two Tom's in on a string. They came running at me. Ya never know, they are hard birds to figure out. That's the fun in it

If you're there on Saturday I wouldn't just write the day off for scouting.  I'm no expert but I'd go out and hen call, if you get a tom answering set up a decoy or two and see if you can blast one.  I don't have time to get out and scout so that's generally how I hunt them.  Good luck

Don't screw up your Monday morning hunt by bumping the turkeys to different roost areas by be in aggressive on Sunday night.  If you are hunting private property, the landowner should know their patterns.  Be where they want to go.

Thanks for the tips, the landowner isn't really interested in them so he doesn't keep track of their patterns besides what field they like to walk in to

How about what time they walk into that field and from what direction?  Perfect ambush info!
