For hunts where distance may come into play, I've been running a Nightforce A.T.A.C.R. 5-25x56 with MOAR Reticle on a custom Tikka in 300 WSM.  Relatively heavy mountain hunting setup at 10-11ish lbs. but it gives me bombproof, tack-driving peace of mind out to 650-700 yards.

I run a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x32 with Alumina lens caps on my little Kimber Montana in .308 Win. Not too shabby at 5.95 lbs. with three 168 gr. Barnes TTSX rounds and a lightweight sling.  I'm comfy out to 350 yards with this rig.

I am considering a Leupold VX-6HD 3-18x44 for my next UL build.  Sweet little gap scope.

I started out with cheaper scopes in my youth until I looked through friends rifles with better scopes at dusk and saw the huge difference quality scopes can provide for light and clarity.  And made the switch to higher quality.
