Idaho Bear Baiting
« on: April 15, 2017, 08:31:34 PM »
Got 2 bait sites put in today.  Wore OUT!  I'll post a few photos tomorrow and then once they start hitting the baits.  Got snowed on while putting in the first bait.

Good luck Fred! Baiting bear is not an easy undertaking. It's probably somewhere along the lines of your hog trips you shared with us. Work, miles, consistency: that can get results.

First bear showed up Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Has eaten very little so far.  None of the other baits have been hit and no tracks or droppings seen anywhere.  I imagine things are about to bust loose.

Is this normal for them to hole up for so late, or is it just the late spring we're having? I haven't seen any scat yet but I did see a track in April that was only a day old or so.  When they do come out is it like a light switch as far as increased activity?  I've been holding out for better weather and warmer temps w my spring wa tag.  By the sounds of it I haven't missed much.

I am assuming things have been slow.  I have talked with two other bear baiters in Idaho and neither had had any activity or seen any sign up to this point.  I know the spot I'm baiting in, two years ago I had 8 bears on the bait within a week, but I didn't start baiting until around the 10th of May.  I'm still finding snow up higher.  The mountains in that area are not greening up very quickly so I think all things combined they are off to a slow start.  This bear has been in 3 days and has barely eaten much more than a butter dish full each time.
