Pretty sure the bear hitting my bait is in this stage.

Stage 2—Walking hibernation is the 2-3 weeks following emergence when metabolic processes adjust to normal summer levels. During walking hibernation, bears voluntarily eat and drink less than they will later during normal activity. They also excrete less urine, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium.

I do it for a couple of reason, I can check it from a distance and see if they have been removed.  I like to do it to keep smaller critters and birds out, right now after this last visit from the bear I have a crow that is going to town on the bait.  :)  Also with the wireless cameras you need 2 bars to consistently get photos sent, sometimes coverage goes from 2 bars to 1 and once in a while it does not send a photo.  So with the sticks in there if I suddenly get a photo and the sticks have been removed then I know something hit the bait, but I did not get a photo.  I can't help you with the roads in that area, but everything I have heard is there is still a bunch of snow and washouts.  I would be real careful.  You taking the dogs over to run that area?  I'm going to take a trip this weekend from Wallace to Avery, but I've heard there is probably still too much snow, but I need to go check it out for myself and get an idea on when I can start a bait over in that area.

Nice lord grizzly!!  Got any photos to share?

Thanks rasbo, honestly I could care less if I kill one or not, I just enjoy the whole process and sitting on the baits and watching the bears.  if a big ol toad walks in I will thump it, if not I will enjoy the whole thing just as much!

Sorry no. I don't post pictures online. I keep these accounts for the classifieds and the small handful of topics that peak my interest I'll jump in on. Bear baiting being one of them. Good luck, looks like your off to a good start
