had a tom strutting in the dekes today
« on: April 15, 2017, 08:46:14 PM »
Had a Tom strutting in the dekes today, but he walked.

They had me pinned down from all sides before the Tom came in..... and finally identified me as the old fat man that I am.

That was one lucky tom

Good luck folks!

You want a pic of an old fat guy laying on his belly desperately trying not to get spotted????

I'm not sure the forum decorum would allow for it.

LOL......    after more than 20 years and nearly 200 patches I had to retire them.       Man, I killed a lot of stuff in those pants.

Sunday was tough, too.

Had a nice gobbler fly down at first light into my meadow about 100 yards away.   He could see my dekes and probably gobbled 70 times but he would not come in.

Several hours later another Tom walked by but he was totally disinterested in what I was selling.    He didn't even look attracted to the fake ladies giving him the "come hither" putt and cluck.

Tough weekend for me.

I'd grown used to coming home with birds on the openerm

Now I have to go back.      8)

I've never had much luck with decoys, it almost seems to scare the birds in my experience.
My spring opener highlight was a mountain chickadee landing on my shotgun barrel.
It perched on the ventilated rib, looked around, hopped a little closer to me, and took off.

I'm not sure I want to see Dan-o hunting without pants.

You didn't want to see him in those old pants either.  His stitching on all those patches was suspect.  It's good that he retired them.

Sounds like my entire year last year.
Lots of birds, lots of gobbling and strutting, but no good shot.
I'm  going again though.
