Your choice of factory .223/556 ammo?
« on: April 21, 2017, 08:18:26 PM »
I am curious what your choice of factory ammo (not reloads) for .223/556 ARs?

Currently I am shooting Hornady .223 55gr, FMJBTs, I got on a great deal. They shoot well.

What is or would be your go to factory round?

:) factory I like Winchester White box, 45 grain HP. it is a bit light, favorite is Hornady soft point, 55 grain, 40 to a box. I tried Vmax in my 22-250 and they blew the hell out of coyotes, my typical shot is 50-125 yards, the vmax blew guts and stuff 10 yards past the coyote, soft points open some but penetrate.

Hornady has pretty much been dominating the factory ammunition game for the last 5 years or so. They are staying on top of things and keeping up to speed with new offering and and in multiple loads per chambering. I really like Hornady factory ammo. I use it in 6.5 Grendel, 6.5 Creedmoor, .223 and 6mm Creedmoor. All produce 1/2 MOA at 300 yards. What more could a guy ask for with factory ammo?

Are you talking hunting or just paper punching?  Everyday plinking, I like pmc x-tac.  Hunting, I reload with Hornady v-max.

I use it mainly for home defense, I shoot a few hundred rounds a month just to keep a little muscle memory.

Black Hills 60gr ballistic tips or 77gr MatchKings out of a Rock River 1/8 barrel.
Both shoot tiny groups.

I mostly shoot my AR in 3gun matches. While I reload for everything else except shotgun, loading rifle ammo for the AR is more of a pain than it's worth.  I've found that PMC X-Tac M193 is plenty accurate enough for 3gun and can be picked up cheaply enough I don't feel guilty about not reloading.  Doesn't keep the reloaded in me from continuing to scrounge and board the brass.

64gr Winchester Ranger Power points.  RA223R2, that's what you want.

Federal XM193 (comes in a black or white box normally)

OR

Federal .223 milspec (comes in a green box sold at Walmart) its a little cheaper but the same thing as the 223 in the black box.

I prefer 5.56 XM193 however as it could still be used in a defensive scenario.

XM193 almost exclusively here as well.  I keep a good stash of M855 on hand as well.  Never had any issues with the Federal stuff.

:yeah:  for storage and plinking.

Reloads for everything else, except for some boxes of various factory loads for testing.
