What a JOKE
« on: April 22, 2017, 04:41:06 PM »
Just thumbing through the kryptek booklet that came stuck inside the latest eastmans magazine and WOW. $400 for a puffy, $549 for a soft shell jacket and $700 bucks for a rain jacket?!?! That is beyond comical. Must be trying to become the latest "it" gear, better be some space age stuff for those prices!  :yike: :yike: :yike:

Geez. $700 for a rain coat. I've bought several cars and all our weapons for less.  :dunno:

Do you guys bitch this much about Ferrari's?
Stihl equipment?
People that own their own planes?

It's called capitalism.  If people value your product enough to buy enough of it to keep you in business, you win.  Not enough people do, you lose.

I don't own any Kryptek, but my understanding is this stuff is made out of the best waterproof fabric available in the market.  The same stuff lots of the high end mountaineering clothing manufacturers use, and sell for more money, and still manage to stay in business.

Not for you?  Great, but enough with the whining already.

Wild Things hard shell jacket $659
Arcteryx LEAF Alpha jacket $849

Seems about right to me for a upper end waterproof hunting jacket, if kryptek's product is good.  I've had cheep, mid-range, and upper end and the adage "buy once, cry once" certainly applies.  It's all about the garments ergonomic adjustability, quality of materials, seam taped, and durability.

Seems like hunting clothing cycles pretty quick. One brand gets a bunch of press for awhile, then the next one takes its place. Each is more expensive than the previous.

Looks like about right that is their Altitude line.  Looked at Sitka at their high end water proof top of the line and saw they were in the same price range. All other Kryptek stuff is pretty reasonable priced  I have Kryptek and love it.  Look for their sales a close out.  https://kryptek.com/camouflage

I'm sure it's great stuff and worth the price to some, and yes I understand how capitalism works and I actually support it as a concept.

If Stihl products are a similar example, call me crazy, but the last Stihl chainsaw I purchased is worth every penny of what I paid and it was notably less $$ than the raincoat in question.

This thread was created because to some, a $700 raincoat seems ridiculously expensive. No one is trying to say a company can't make a fine raincoat and ask whatever they want for it; $700 just seems funny is all. Take the view for what it's worth.

I think the one that really shocked me was the $550 soft shell, seems like soft shell jackets are a dime a dozen. I'm sure it's good stuff but as far as waterproof and breathability Kuiu is still rated higher and for half the price. But to each his own, I just can't imagine snagging that thing on a limb or ripping the butt on a rock while glassing, I think I'd actually cry a little.  :chuckle:

It took me a few seasons but all my gear now is kryptek. Some new and some lightly used off classified adds. Its been great gear and worth the money spent, but I got my whole rain gear set for 400.

I bought a north face jacket 20 years ago when I was  into  mountaineering. It was $400 back then and worth every penny, so $700 today doesn't seem that far off.

Just did a little research. The fabric they are using in these new jackets is intriguing the pores actually open up with internal temp change. When you are hot they open up. When you stop they close up. Making them more windproof when sitting and getting more moisture transfer while you are exerting. Way out of my league but I can always dream.
