Turkey calling slow
« on: April 24, 2017, 09:55:11 AM »
I was out this weekend and had one bird talking but for the most part it was slower than the past few years,  is the rut late or over?

Probably just henned up heavy. It will improve as hens begin to lay eggs and split from the Tom's during the day.
Fish hard, hunt harder!

I noticed the birds in my area were fairly quiet. It was a bit windy which never helps but I did notice it being quieter then last weekend. Typical turkeys, one min red hot the next barely speaking.

We had a heck of a hunt. I went to a new spot and I called in 8 shooters in 3 days. We bagged 3 and missed 3 times. The two largest birds hung up at about 50 yards. We managed two toms and I shot a hen that had a 7" beard.

We had a pop-up blind near some roost trees and on day 1 they flew down to us off the roost. The whole hunt the only calls I made were cutting and loud yelps frequent in the morning and maybe one set of 7-8 cuts every hour or so throughout the day. As soon as I could see the birds I would either not call at all if they were still coming in or do a soft purr, and cluck if they hung up.

There were two other groups of hunters near us Friday and Saturday and between those two groups they shot 4 birds.

They were really henned up in the morning down in klickitat. Had a group of 3 tons, 5 jakes, and 15 hens in a field. They wouldn't even gobble. About 1045 I went back to the area and called in 3 jakes that came in silent, passed on them. As I was walking back to the truck one of the toms fired off and I called him across a wide open field to 15 yards before I killed him. Nice 2 year old.
