What pack do you use for hunting/packing out meat?
« on: April 30, 2017, 01:39:33 PM »
What bag do you use for hunting big game? Share a picture and your reasons why you choose to use it.

MY SELECTION= Marine ILBE field bag and assault pack.  I like this bag because it can haul up to 120 lbs, and it has a comfortable back support frame and belly band. The main pack is 4500 cubic inches and the assault pack is 1500 cubic inches. My rifle can strap to either side leaving my hands free to hike and maneuver through the forest.

My day pack is a Badlands 2800.  When necessary, I can haul out at least 80 lbs of gear and meat ( I am small el-lamo kind of guy). For just going in for meat, I use a Cabelas Alaskan I Pack that I have really liked.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

Kifaru composite hunter frame, AMR bag, guide lid, grab it, with medium belt pouch and small belt pouches. I use this for both a day pack or long term pack.

I chose it because the back profile fits my back well, it's a bombproof pack, can hold way more than I can carry and I only needed one system. As someone who will be hunting elk every year even though the price is high it's more of an investment that has already paid off.

I also use this same setup for just hiking outside of hunting too.

Same exact setup I'm running, minus the grab it.

I got a EXO mountain gear k2 2000 daypack last year. I love it. I have more gear in it than my old cheap pack and it doesn't get uncomfortable after hiking all day. 1 regret now is I wish I would have got the smaller medium frame instead of large because I've lost 42 lbs. I just have it almost fully titghtend at the waste.

Kuiu ultra 3000 bag with kuiu icon pro suspension. Use it because it has minimal weight and bulk at less than 4# but can still pack 100# between the bag and frame.  Great daypack or overnight.

You can get a medium belt from EXO

https://exomountaingear.com/shop/hipbelt/

I have a 2015 EXO frame with 2000 bag which is great for day hunts and getting ready to purchase the 5500 bag to compliment it for week long hunts.

Easton fullbore 5600. Had it loaded down over 100 lbs a couple times on packouts and while it is uncomfortable it can handle the weight. I don't think there is any pack that is comfortable when you get over 100 lbs though

tgomez  using the same pack.  Just recently before that was using an older Gregory Shasta.  I have done a full deer and two elk with the Gregory well over 100 and it worked great just through it all in main compartment.  I just got the Marine ILBE this year and so far it is more comfortable.  Been doing a lot of 65-70 lb hikes training for train to hunt and it feels great.  I and pull the load lifters down and run and the weight is solid no bouncing.  Sure not the lightest pack when empty but it was free.  A lot of other gear getting bought before I would drop the money on a Kifaru or Stone glacier.

I've been using a mystery ranch Metcalf for the last 3 seasons and its an absolute animal of a pack for hauling meat! Multiple loads over 100lbs amd very comfortable. I bone out all my deer and carry them in one trip. I just picked up a kifaru reckoning bag amd duplex frame I'm very excited to use this season. Pic is of the mystery ranch.

Kuiu Icon Pro. Lightweight, can handle a heavy load, and comfortable. I use the 3500 bag for day hunts and the 5200 for 1-2 day overnight hunts.

Kuiu Ultra for deer hunts.  I switch to Mystery Ranch Crew Cab for elk, as it's a bit sturdier for heavier loads.  Both compress down for day hunting.  Can fit an entire quartered or de-boned deer in the Kuiu.  And the MR Crew Cab handles elk quarters very well.

:yeah:
I have a really small bag attached to it with my essential stuff and a game bag in a seal a meal bag that I just hunt with until I bag something.  I already have everything I need and can pack an entire deer deboned or half an elk.  My buddy hunts with the same setup so he gets the other half of the elk.

I use the Badlands 2200, enough for elk quarters and multiple deer or antelope quarters or about 80 pounds of bones meat. It has proved to be bullet proof, reliable and cost was very reasonable. I can't carry over 80 pounds due to knee issues so I don't worry about a bigger pack, this one works great and is comfortable!

Eureka 3900. I've packed out several deer with it and can't see any reason to spend a bunch more on a "hunting" pack.

I typically hunt with a day pack, which I can cram a front should of an elk in, two if I really cram them in there.  That would be trip one.  Then I grab the bullpacs to haul the rest.  bullpacs is much more comfortable.  Although I like a 4000plus cubic inch pack for hauling meat over a day pack, I prefer to hunt with a smaller pack so I don't make as much noise in the woods.

I ended up with the kuiu icon pro 7200 and 1850. I went this route for multiple reasons. 1st reason: I'm not rich and this was the best bag I could afford and I got it new on sale for 30% off so was an easy decision. 2nd reason: I really liked the idea of being able to switch bags really easily! Now I hike in with my 7200 bag and when I get to camp quickly swap it for the 1850 bag for a really nice day pack.
3rd reason: I liked how you could seperate the frame and the pack for hauling meat and gear, but not getting your gear all bloody.
This past feb I was wearing my 1850 bag and shot a fatty Javelina. I was able to carry the whole thing out in between the bag and the frame. It was quite comfortable too.
I feel like some people get down on these packs, but for the price and versatility, I'm super stoked on this pack.  The heaviest load I've carried so far was a 5 day trip starting at about 75 lbs.. We covered a little over 50 miles and not one complaint! For under $450.00 for all I couldn't be happier!

Agree completely. I like having the flexibility to change bags when settling at camp in just a minute or two. I have an Icon Pro 7200 and an 1850. The 7200 feels huge at times so I'm planning to buy a 5200 bag for my mule deer hunt this fall. A lot of folks seem to hate on Kuiu on Rokslide and some extent here but my experience has been nothing but positive and their gear is top knotch.

Couldn't agree more with both statements above! Like I said, I'm super stoked on this set up..
I thought I'd just use the 7200 for everything, but on my AZ Mulie hunt, it was just too much for a day pack. It just wasn't easy to grab something right quick, the 1850 is perfecto for my needs.. Love it.

Who here has badlands experience?

The sacrifice and the 2200 look like some real nice options for packing gear and also packing out a deer (not elk) ((I would be with atleast one friend who could help pack it out with his pack as well))

Awesome TBar. Have you seen the Sacrifice pack? It hold about 1200more cubic inches of space and has the hypervent system to save you from sweating as much, it seems to have a lot of good reviews and it's at about the same price as the 2200

I also have packed many animals with a 2200.  The thing with them is that the torso doesn't adjust.  If you are under 6' I would be a little concerned.  With Badlands warranty I wouldn't be scared of a used one.  Just make sure it fits your torso.

So it's a tall pack so for me being 5'10 wouldn't be a good fit? What would make it less comfortable for a shorter guy?

Also has anyone here used the sacrifice pack? I love the idea but when I dug deep I read that the hypervent system is very poky when it's loaded heavy and pushes a bunch of pressure on your spine 😳.

I also found they redesigned it for this year the sacrifice LS and supposedly that is fixed..

Just looking for a first hunting/meat hauling pack for ~250$

You may be fine at five ten.  Torso length isn't always linked with height.  I'm just saying to be aware that it doesn't have an adjustable torso, and you may want to try one on first.

Fortunately I hunt with my wife so packing meat rarely is a problem.

Tenzing 5000.  Love it.
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I'll second the Tenzing. I've got the 6000. It's a bit heavier than some others but it is a workhorse.
