For big fish that are going to pull the release or fishing shallow I like to use a slow rod 9'-10'. For blackmouth that can be deep and not very big I use a med-fast so I can get a release if the fish can't. Also use a 4 leader between cable and release so I don't drag a shaker around. For price Why spend a lot? For salmon you run flasher's that take away the action your not holding it all day casting like your drift fishing a river so the extra weight does not matter and it takes more abuse. I have 15 D/R rods but My favorite is a glass 9.5' lamiglass that's 15 years old I won at a Puget sound angler's meeting.

I ran my 1165 Steelhead Series Loomis out of the downrigger yesterday and it worked great. A little pricey, but I love that rod.

that rod does it all. i regret selling mine cause my buddie doesnt know how to fish and that rod is beat to shiat now.

i got an 1104 now and would use it in a downrigger no problem.

He got next to the boat and just tried to hold bottom (about 12' deep), and i just slowly lifted the rod, and he came right up (to be released).
