Anyone hunt the pack forest for deer and/or elk? Any thoughts on it?

I've spent two seasons in there hunting deer until it became a public K-12 school Monday thru Friday and is a gun free zone. There are better spots in the Mashel unit. Elbe hills is DNR land and there is national forest just West of Ranier. If you're the weekend warrior type and only want to hunt on weekends it might be worth the time, make sure you enter from the U.W. campus parking lot unless you like smashed out windows.

Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27:3

Pack Forest made changes to hunting in 2014, hunting only allowed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pack Forest is not a gun free zone, you are still allowed to carry firearms following state laws.

There are both deer and elk there as it is a main travel area between the Nisqually river and areas to the east. Bear also hang around and do their fair share of damage. Because of all the students, hikers, bikers, and horseback riders the animals are pretty jumpy. You can fill actually see fewer bunters on the three days a week than you would in the Elbe Hills area and have as good a chance of filling a tag. Access is easy with roads and trails criss crossing throughout the site. Like said above, park in the main lot, not out near the highway unless you need new glass in your vehicle.

Check out their site, it includes maps of the trails and roads. I spend about 1 day a week hiking it since it is 5 minutes away and almost always see deer, the occasional coyote that messes up getting caught in the open, maybe elk once every month or two and a fair amount of bear sign for the size of the area.

There is no greater respect to have for wildlife than to harvest an animal fairly and use it's flesh to feed your family.  ~me

I've hunted it quite a bit in the past. Seen 1 bear during archery season, lots of deer, and a few elk. Heard more elk than I've seen though, it's nasty thick in some spots. I've always parked on the alder cutoff rd side and never had any issues with Windows getting smashed out.

It's not the worst place to go try for a deer on the west side. I never saw another hunter in there.
