the likelihood of putting together a rifle this winter is becoming greater and greater. i have been comparing calibers and keep going round and round, sometimes ending with more questions than i had before. so i backed up and decided, picking a bullet first, then an efficient caliber to push it will be the way. my current rig is a 300WM, and overall ive been happy with it.
im 75% decided on the .284 berger 195gr, and am thinking the 7-300WM would be a great choice to push it. anyone with experience in the caliber? words of wisdom? TIA

i have, i just spilt blood with one. things that turn me away: garbage brass, pressure, short barrel life- as this rifle is getting one in the carbon flavor.

Get a hold of Jeff Brozovich aka Broz over at Long Range Only. Broz has build several variations of the 7-300 win mag. From listening to a recent podcast I got the impression he was ultimately disappointed in the results and has fallen back to the standard 300 win mag.

Yea that dude has a lot of experience on 1000 yd elk too...... I pay attention to anything he's solid on or against.

i have read a lot of his stuff, and the only place i stray from it, is i dont hunt elk with a rifle, and that seems to be his standby. to compete with the BC of the .284 195gr, i need to be pushing 215s at 300 norma speeds or using 230s. both things i dont think i want to, especially in an 8.5-9lb gun..

If a 28 Nosler has a short barrel life then a 7-300WM would too as they are pretty close to being ballistic twins.  I know Nosler brass is made by Norma and maybe it's not quite as tough as Lapua brass but there is certainly much worse brass on the market and if you're looking at doing a 7-300WM the best brass available for that would be Norma so it's a wash.

As for "pressure" with the 28 Nosler, IMO, a lot of this comes from people trying to drive the 195's to get them to outperform the 180's.  The 195 has a pretty long bearing surface and I know there were quite a few that were pressuring out with the 195's before they could get enough velocity out of them to outperform the 180's but I also think some disregarded those pressure signs and continued to drive the 195's even harder which is likely why some believe the brass is junk.  I believe Travis w/RBros rifles ran into this with the 195's versus the 180's and he would be a VERY good source to talk to about this.  Travis is a really good guy and won't BS you. 

At the top of the "guns and ammo" page there is a place to ask Travis whatever you want and he always responds to people in a pretty timely manner.

Nothing a .300 Win Mag with a 230gr Berger won't do with allot less hastle but I completely understand the wildcat thing. I have a reamer that is my canfiguration of the 7mm- 300 Win. I just haven't used it yet. Waiting for CH4D to deliver my custom dies for it. Then I will have a barrel chambered.

There was a build that recently finished up on another forum in 30 Nosler that used a similar parts list, Ti action, CF wrapped barrel, CF stock, Ti muzzle brake and once it was scoped up, it still weighed nearly 10lbs.  Other than a very high cool factor, it seemed like a VERY expensive build for only saving a few ounces.

The carbon barrel is not typically to save weight over a sporter barrel its to save weight over a comparable long range varmit / bull barrel that would be pounds heavier. 

But if you start putting 40 oz scopes on em its really hard to keep the weight down. I've got to go with Leupold to stay under 10#.

I get that, but with good glass selection and using the same high end components I would anyway, you're saving half a pound just by switching to ti action.

I've built a half dozen or so 28's and the brass is very easy to smoke.... annealing after every firing, bushing dies, and realistic expectations of velocity helps. The 195's live at 3050fps with the properly throated reamer and 27"ish barrel. I'd go 7-300 personally.... just for the brass issue.

I know you can get Bertram brass for the STW and that seems to be pretty good stuff.

What brass that's available for the 300WM is better than the 28 Nosler brass???

  x3 I run a 6.5 and 7 STW. The 7 stw would be a great choice.

Because I have access to a reamer for it.... 😜
Haven't built an STW yet. Wouldn't have any issues with it either. 👍
