First Bear down
« on: May 26, 2017, 07:32:19 PM »
    My 2017 bear hunt,
After a lot of years trying to harvest a Bear I finally was able to seal the deal. I have hunted for approx. 40 years and have only seen a couple bears during hunting season. I've drawn two earlier spring tags on the westside only to never see a bear, and have the permits go unfilled. I finally decided that I would save my points to apply for the higher harvest areas on the Northeast side of the state. This was my lucky year, and I was drawn for one.
Now that I had the tag, I had very little time to scout and I have never hunted this area before. I called up Dale at Bearpaw outfitters and I booked a semi-guided hunt with him. I set aside a week to hunt and hopefully would be able to harvest my first bear.
My first morning came early 3:00am to sit down and look at the map with Dale and have him suggest where I should be hunting at. Having never hunted this area Dales' suggestions where priceless. I hunted the areas he pointed out to me and was open to any pointers he gave me. The days where long with hunting hours not ending until approx. 9 pm. Thankfully when I returned each night from the hunt dinner was ready from me at the lodge. I hunter the next 3 days, Finally harvesting my first Bear. The Bear was no monster, but for my first I'm happy to have harvested him.

Congrats on your first. My first bear was a "monster" like that too. But, I still love it.

Nice job, congrats. He will be a fantastic eater. I love bear meat. It's my wife and I's favorite meat.  So are you hooked on bear hunting Now? I spend more time chasing them than anything else.

Ripper,  I really do like hunting this time of the year, it was great to be out there hunting without a bunch of other hunters around you. Also to boot I got to see another wolf they are truly amazing animals, but they really need to be managed in this state.
