I have no doubts the pvc will get chewed up. No problem. If, big if as it won't happen,  my 165gr accubonds go through then fine, tbe plates are covered by warranty and I'll get new ones. Bro in law has a 30 30...we will hammer it at 100 and see what happens. My 308 will be hitting it at 150 and longer,  not worried a bit.

Maybe mild steel, but not ar-500. These impacts are from .375 diameter 350 Gr matchkings with an impact velocity of over 2900 fps on 3/8" ar-500.


I did punch a hole in the same plate with a 270 wsm and a 130 nbt. Velocity wins every time!

So. Here are a few things we learned.

1. The pvc was beat to a pulp by shrapnel. The stand worked but took a beating and did not survive.
2. The plates do indeed give off a resounding ping.
3. The surface is unmarred from a 165gr Accubond.
4. The surface is every so slightly marred by a 7mm mag.


We had fun, set the steel up at 175, shot it up. Good times.

Is it just the crossbar that took the beating?
If so, just use some fittings on the uprights and move the crossbar off of the same plane as the plate. Or just make one out of piping and be done with it. But, a 2nd plane with the PVC would keep your light weight mobility where you want it. Could do Ts off the uprights, then a rectangle Halo hanging the plate in the middle of the halo.

Yep, crossbar got shrapnel damage. The thin cable also eas cut by plate edges. Considering it was getting hit with the 308 and really hamnered by the 7mm mag it did just fine.

I've tried all sorts of stands and hangers over the years and I consider most of them consumables. For an inexpensive stand you can build one out of scrap 2x4s and a couple of cheap hinges. They hold up pretty well and it only costs a couple bucks for a stand that will last for at least a couple trips out.

It held up surprisingly well considering what we put it through. I've never shot steel before, it was a lot of fun.

It's an awful lot of fun! The farther away you are, the more fun it is. There's something satisfying about waiting to hear that "ping" after you've already seen the impact.
