Banks Lake 248/272?
« on: June 09, 2017, 12:30:06 PM »
Anyone here hunt the shores of Banks Lake?  I'm a recent subscriber to OnXMaps and saw there's a few pockets of BLM land on either side of the lake, and just curious if it's off limits overall or open for hunting, and if people have any experiences they're willing to share.

I also recently acquired a kayak, and the idea of skipping around between the drainages on my kayak looking for deer sounds particularly fun...  (P.S., that's legal, right?  I skimmed the pamphlet and it says boats are not allowed for pursuing game, but that seems to only apply to motor-driven boats...)

For pursuing game....no, not legal. You certainly may use a boat to access hunting areas. You may shoot from a boat so long as you are not under any motorized propulsion or momentum.

This is why I'm confused...  You can't use a kayak to pursue game, but you can shoot from one as long as it doesn't have a motor??  Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but how could taking a shot from a boat not also be considered pursuing game?

I could be wrong but I think that rule is written to keep people from motoring into flocks of ducks and blasting away.

I would interpret "pursuing" as using your boat to influence game for a shot opportunity. Duck hunters routinely shoot from anchored boats with or without motors. They are not running up on a flock to flush them and shoot at them. You may shoot at a deer on the shoreline so long as your boat is drifting or anchored and not under any momentum from the motor. You may not run up on a deer and shoot as your boat is coasting to a stop. If you just want to hop scotch from spot to spot in your kayak and get out on shore and hunt, you'll be just fine.

OK, that's kinda how I imagined the rule to be intended so I think I'm legal.  This is all just theory at the moment but I'm envisioning hopping between draws to scout, maybe glassing from the boat if it's really calm, or just jumping out onto the nearest high rock to glass.  I doubt I would try to shoot from a kayak anyway....  I'm not THAT cool ;).
