fawns are dropping
« on: June 10, 2017, 07:38:08 PM »
me and the Mrs. took a trip up into the woods today just for an afternoon getaway and saw a couple different wobbly legged spotted fawns...some of the other does we saw were real skittish-don't know if they are gettin ready to drop or what...normally this time of year they really aren't that concerned about vehicle traffic in this area--did see two confirmed bucks--one with a group of 4 does and a small buck (about 2" of velvet) flattened out in the ditch across the road from where we are building our new house...sorry to see that but he was one we haven't seen there before.  only saw one other rig up there all day and it was parked--had double cb antenna's and a green piece of paper on the dash (not a weyco hangtag) so figured he was up there with other people doing the hound damage bear hunt...is it time to break out the fawn in distress coyote call and shoot some of them deer killers ?

The whitetails at my place dropped a good 2 weeks ago.  They were super pregnant and now they are much leaner.

Have yet to see any fawns yet.

Haven't seen any whitetail fawns yet, I'm sure they're out there. I was happy to see a set of twin Mule Deer fawns with a healthy doe this morning up in the hills of the NE.

Have had a pair of fawns in my yard on and off for the past two weeks. I just try and stay out of their way. Early on, I had a call from a neighbor lady who spotted one of them tangled up in her fence. I had to pull it out by it's tail......they can scream louder than a hyena (and so much for them being scentless). Put it in some bushes and the doe reunited with it by the next day. The official advice is to leave them alone, but they can be rescued if necessary. They have a few favorite spots to lie down in and keep returning to them. Both had been lying down for a long time, when I saw the doe come into the yard and walked past them and heading away without feeding them. She would have passed by a garage side door.....so I opened the door and let her see me. She turned around and the fawns soon spotted her and nursed on and off for about an hour. So that was a bit of interference but helpful to the fawns. I've also got 5 gallon buckets of water in front and back yards......they can stay in my yard as long as they need to be there, since it is a fairly quiet, shaded and safe place for them. This pair of fawns is very independent.....they look like they may start moving around with the doe pretty soon. They keep watching her and are browsing on what she browses on. Been an interesting period of wildlife observation.
