Had an idea last night for an archery turkey target
« on: February 24, 2009, 08:29:09 AM »
With turkey season approaching and me wanting to do it with a bow, I've been trying to come up with a cheap way of getting a turkey target and I think I've come up with a solution.  Use a foam turkey decoy.  I'd put my block target behind it for a back stop as I'm sure my arrow would probably pass through.  I saw some on Bass Pro for $15.  That's a hell of a lot cheaper than a 3D target.  Any thoughts on this?

someone was doing that last year. seemed to work fine if i remember correctly.
make sure you  practice shooting sitting down if you plan to hunt out of a blind.

Roger that.  I practiced shooting out of my stool in my blind quite a bit before deer season last year.

Not really.  The only turkey hunting I've done up that way is the Little Pend Oreille Wildlife Refuge.  Why do you ask?

I was pretty sure that was it, thanks I'll probably go over there on the weekend before. Is that to close to the hunting time? Or will it give me enough time to find roosts and such?

I think that should be enough time.  Hopefully the property owner will have some info for you.

I just take an old worn out foam decoy, and pin it to a block with 16 penny nails,  Another buddy takes the same deke and that spray foam in a can you use on windows and home repair. He'll fill it full with an old arrow or stake in it. He said it'll keep a compound bow from passing through?

Becarefull with that.

Bear general season always started on August 1st. This may be the last year of that.
Sturgeon were always measured to the tip of the tail. Not so any more.

The only way always works is if you always read the regulations.

Yep.

A funny story about that.
A couple years ago I was talking with a co worker about his upcoming ml elk hunt and he was concerned about the new opening date change in the regs. Something didn't sound right so I checked and sure enough the regs were different then what was posted online. I called and told him to double check with F&W. The online (earlier) date was correct and the printed version was wrong.

To make the story really funny (not really) is that on opening day he and his buddy killed a couple of cows and while they were walking covered in blood and hearts in hand they ran into a guy biking in. The biker was said he was scouting and asked what they were doing. The biker thought the regs had the correct date and was pissed. He hightailed it out of there to set up camp.

The lesson? Always read the regs. Both print and online.
