Pop-up pickup camper?
« on: June 19, 2017, 09:17:14 AM »
Wife and I are looking into pickup campers we are leaning hard toward a pop up for light weight and good clearance.  I have a 92 F250 diesel  that I know will handle one great but I don't trust it for real long trips with the family. I also have a 2016 F150 that I think would do well with airbags. I found a 2000 Starcraft 8' pop up in nice condition I think it would be around 1500 lbs loaded. Anyone have any experience with these campers and hauling them in new F150 or what I should look for when I go look at it?

Measure the box of the camper to be sure it'll fit through the tailgate. The newer pickups have narrower tailgate openings than older models. Had a friend a few years ago that bought a camper made in the late 1990s & when he went to get it with his new pickup, it didn't fit.

Also, try hard to keep the center of gravity in front of the back axle. It'll handle a lot better.  1500 pounds shouldn't be a problem.

I spent a lot of time going back and forth about the same thing then decided to get a hard side truck camper. It depends how you will use it. When I travel to hunt i often sleep at truck stops or state parks stopping when ever I'm tired then taking off early in the morning. That would be a pain with a pop-up. A good friend of mine and his wife have a 4wheel pop-up though and they love it.

I'm sure a nice trailer would be great but I need to be able to pull my small boat.
