Canon dslr's
« on: February 24, 2009, 04:07:57 PM »
I am new to dslr's.  I want a nice starter camera, but one I will not outgrow as I learn more.  I have been looking at the Canon xsi.  I would probably start with the 18-55 IS lens, and purchase a telephoto later, after possibly renting a few to see what I like.  I would like to do general photography (mostly my son, as he grows and participates in sports and such), and also wildlife photos.  Will this camera work for what I want, or would I be better off stepping up to the Canon 40D?  Would I outgrow the xsi, or is the 40D more than I need?  I have no plans to do this prfessionally.  Strickly as a hobby.  I would also be open to suggestions for other brands and/or lenses.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you can swing the extra cash I would go with the 40D, if not I would look for a 20D and skip the Xsi :twocents:

Not to start a fan boy war, but I'm quite happy with my Nikon D80. I feel that Nikon gives you a bit more for your dollar.

I would jump on Craig's List and pick up a D40x or D80. The reason is the internal AF motor. Means you can use some of the older auto focus lenses that the D60/D70 can't use.

Nikon has good options, but it does not give you more for your dollar.  For some things, Nikon is cheaper.  For other things, they are more expensive.

Before you choose Nikon or Canon, go try a few out at Bestbuy or your local camera store and see what one seems more intuitive to you and the uses you might use it for.  Do not let a salesman tempt you to another brand.  Just try out the cameras you want and leave.

If you have used Nikon or Canon brand cameras in the past many of the features carry over into the dslr cameras.  If you are familiar with Nikon, that may be your choice.  Otherwise, check them out and make a decision.

I decided to go with the 40D.  Cameralandny.com has a good package deal with the 17-85 IS lens.  I'll try a few telephoto's to see what I like, and buy that later.  Thanks for the info.
