Trail head to coundly lake, by wilkeson?

Looking for a hike into a lake for an overnighter w the wife and friends.  Can you drive to the trail head into coundly off the 7720 rd out of wilkeson?  If I remember correctly it's faster to go off trail and just follow the creek??
