My dad and brother and I were drawn for deer in this unit I have not hunted this unit before although my Dad and brother have hunted the Southern portion for Antelope does anyone have any experience in this unit they would like to share, also looking for camp spots to set a wall tent any advice would be helpful.

Dude you drew my tag I put in for it with 5 points but couldn't believe how many with a lot more points put in for it this year. Never been there so I can't help you. Call the local biologist and game warden for some pointers on where to start. Suppose to be some real nice deer in that area good luck hunting.

How many points did you guys have? We didn't draw with 7 in the special, point creep sucks! Pulled pronghorn tags in 73 though. Good luck

We had 9,10,10 points. I've got 6 for Antelope probably put in for 73 next year.
Planning on doing a lot of research but thought I'd try hear first.

Congrats on a great draw.  The irrigated (private) lands west of the airport have most of the whitetails in the unit, as well as good numbers of mule deer.  The Bucknum road is the main paved access into 34, which turns to gravel.  When it is wet, the only easy public land to access, due to the bentonite clay soil of much of the unit, are the BLM sand hills west of the Bucknum Rd.  This area has a high density of deer but also the most pressure, fairly rare to see mature bucks in there.  There are mule deer throughout, but in low densities in much of the area.  Don't overlook the rimrock country east of I-25, moderate densities of deer but some nice bucks.  Any raised topography in the unit with rimrocks and/or scattered pines is worth checking out.

All that said, most of the deer hunters head for the north end of the unit, the foothills of the southern Bighorn mountains and the red and gray walls (metamorphic rock walls that face the toe of the Bighorns across the Buffalo Creek drainage.  Lots of good sites there to set up a wall tent, including a BLM primitive campground in the Bighorn foothills.  The Arminto Road from Waltman is your most direct route into this area, but it can also be reached from the Bucknum and 33 Mile roads. 

While there are a few bigger deer for sure, I'd think long and hard about passing on 22-24" 4 points with average mass. 

I spent a lot of time in that area 1991-2000, so what I know is dated.  It is a fun area with a lot of public land and limited hunter numbers.

Thanks for the information much appreciated. I'm sure it will be a fun hunt not looking for the biggest buck out there but more of the experience I've been hunting with my dad and brother for for close to 47 years now hard to believe ,hunting has taken me to alot of places I would have never seen my 11 year old son is coming with us and I want instill in him hunting is more than taking a trophy it's the whole experience and putting meat on the table.

What would you recommend, Leave early arrive two days before the opener and scout or arrive later and hunt to the end of the season. We do not have enough time to hunt the whole season but will hunt two weeks.
