Leaving bear hides...
« on: February 25, 2009, 02:29:38 PM »
SWHunter's thread reminded me of something and I didn't want to horn in with this. Nice bear again, BTW.

For anyone who leaves their hides out in the field or just has no need for them, I could use some more claws. I make old-looking repro American Indian stuff, like spears, arrows, canes, and turkey wingbone calls... I use the claws and other stuff for decoration, but I'm runnin low.

PM me if interested in sharing. Thanks much

Hey, I'd be willing to give a bag or so of black bear in exchange for a couple pieces (4 - 2 black and 2 brown bear claws) mounted on a necklaces in the Indian stlye.  Got atleast 20 claws, some are still attached to paws... Some are just the claws nothing inside, hollow....  Got any pics of your work, would love to see some of it....

I know that hides can be sold. I guess I misread and thought he was asking for just claws.

It is legal to buy and sell the hides all day long.  What you can't buy are the claws and teeth unless they are attached to the hide.  So in order to buy the claws the guy has to bring you the whole hide.

Usually the teeth are attached to the head and not the hide...  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Thanks Gents, I appreciate your offers. Like I mentioned, it was just a quick reminder that if anyone is leaving hides behind (I fully get why) in the field and it's not too much trouble to cut the paws off and pack them out, I could use them for my personal projects. I can also make a donation to your favorite family charity in exchange, if that works.

The other side of this is that I'm lucky to make 3-5 items a year. I'm a full-time computer geek with an active family, and this is a creative outlet for me. I give these pieces as Christmas gifts to friends and family. If I had higher production numbers and enough supplies to accomodate, I'd barter finished pieces in exchange for the supplies. The claws would be helpfull, but there's a lot more than claws that go into each piece.

Okay, I meant this to be easy. So, I'll end with this...I'm completely fine with GPS coordinates to where you leave your hides, or maybe you leave them in a bucket outside your house for the scavengers to nibble on.

I forget and leave stuff out all the time. Sometimes it's gone when I return to that spot.   ;)

I have a smaller bear hide and skull inside my freezer from 2000. Would someone still be interested in it?

From 2000?  Daing I'd hate to see what kinda freezer burn is on that sucker, lol.

@RCHER, any one can give you any part of a bear they want.  The law just says you can't buy, sell, or trade.  :)

No worries coho, thanks for the offer. I appreciate all the offers folks.

A couple of you asked for pics. Here are a few. I need to take a few more. I can't find pics of a large spear I did for my dad with several claws. But this will give an idea.

Quite different than I thought, I was thinking something simple with a leather necklace threaded threw it.  Wow pretty elaborate and really nice for certain.  That is made from a black bear claw????  I guess I would have thought a bone or something and not a claw.... I hope it didn't sound like I was pulling my claws out cause of the notion of not being able to make one for me.  It was all about the trade or exchange for services and the illegal part I didn't want anything to deal with.  I will still give you a bag a claws with no strings attached is what I meant to state.

Thanks coho. Yeah, due to my lame photography skills, you can't see the claws. I usually just add them as beads onto the lanyard. Or hang them off braided horse tail hair...

The turkey calls are from the wing bones of wild turkeys. There is also deer antler rings,    sinew, and deer rawhide added for
