I'm going to agree with Teacherman. Go with a 7mm-08. Very short and compact and will definately put the smack down on bear, elk or deer. This is an awesome gun!

My initial thoughts you were going with a friend or a buddy and going to participate in the bear/predator control hunt with them in that designated area (16), but getting involved with these guys is crazy.  PM for my buddies Email, he is the head Brown Shirt for the F & G and will have the no *censored* response to this situation going on over there in Tyonek.  Klickman is exactly right, check very carefully on this hunt and arrangements, really sounds fishy to say the least.  If you want to go to AK to get a couple good bears, save your money on a guide and DYI...  Numerous areas and alot of bears if you just know where to look... Maybe I'm overreacting but before folks start complaining about blasting cubs and sows and using ethics as terms etc....  It is a predator control hunt nothing else, what animals you take is not a ethical decision, it is to thin the numbers of black bears.

Wedding plans not withstanding, here are a couple of other thoughts.  The .308 and 30-06 are ballistically and recoil-wise identical (unless you hand load, then you can bump up the '06 a notch). A key element in felt recoil for a given weapon is the projectile weight. An '06 with a 220 gr pill will kick a significantly more than with a 165 gr (my personal choice for the '06).  Consider a Nosler partition bullet to assure good penetration.
