Units 437, 418...Concrete area
« on: February 25, 2009, 05:05:42 PM »
Looking for any tidbits that you might be willing to share in regards to units 437, 418.  I usually hunt for muleys in central wa (chiwawa, entiat etc...).  The wife and I just bought a piece of recreation property near concrete and thought it might be fun to try Blacktails.  The harvest #'s seem to indicate that there are blacktail to be had in these units.  Maps indicate that there's quite a bit of public land.  No one seems to talk about this area in the blogs though...maybe because it's blacktail country?  No doubt that I'll be doing plenty of scouting over the summer.  Probably will go out for sheds starting in a few weeks (if the snow ever starts to melt off).

Not looking for anyone's 'secret spot'.  Just hoping that folks might have a few bits of info to share.

It's not a destination for hunters - a lot of success is by people hunting thier own property.  The habitat is not what it used to be years ago when they were logging all the time.  Typical blackie area- find closed roads and recent clear cuts- nothing different than wetside blacktail.  Boyd Iverson wrote a good book called blacktail tactics II- should be all you need to get you started.

My dad has  lived up there for 25 years- most of the serious deer hunters he knows just pop over 20 to the Methow, or just go up around the Pacific Crest Trail in the Mulie units.  That's what I would do if I lived there anyway.

Appreciate the insight Dansk.  That's one of the options that crossed my mind.  My Dad and uncle went grouse hunting up Goat Creek near Mazama a few years back.  If I remember correctly it was close to deer opener.  They said they're was plenty of pressure, but a lot of people coming home with a filled tag.

Don't get me wrong, I REALLY enjoy hunting for muleys.  But bt intrigues me as well...
I suppose I have options...meaning if I strike out with muleys, I have essentially two more weeks to fill a tag on the westside.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Lots of land to hunt around there. If you get off the roads the deer are pretty easy to find. Just get a map and spend a few days checking out the areas that look interesting. Plenty of gated roads, plenty of open ones. The old late season in 437 used to be really good. Probably not a bad thing to put in for if your after BT.
