East wenaha drawn
« on: July 09, 2017, 03:45:38 PM »
My nest friend drew a gun east wenaha tag, has horses and plans to pack in. Has hunted elk for years and years in north eastern wa. and done well. He is not familiar with the area, is anyone willing to help with a little info on access and/or anything else to help?

Access points are most likely:  Mt Misery/Diamond Peak off the Mt. Road; Panjab, up the Tucannon; West End of Mt. Misery Trail/Turkey, east of Godman accessed by the Skyline Rd.; and Three Forks, accessed from Troy (wouldn't recommend a horse trailer on the south part of the Mtn. Road).  There are other access points, but less used and with less options.

The Tree Forks trail drops you right down to Crooked Creek, which has you at the lowest elevation of that unit basically.  Hunt up, pack down. But you can access trails from the bottom that allow you to hunt a wide area.

From Mt. Misery trail, which is the norther border, which you can access from the east side, Mt. Misery/Diamond Peak or access from the west from Panjab or Turkey, you are near the highest elevations and have border trails that access the northern boundary and the western boundary.

Dave Waldron runs Western Life Outfitters. He is Mtncook on here.  His permit covers about the western half of the unit.  He will have lots of information, but doesn't sound like your friend will be hiring him. Wilderness Expeditions outfits in the unit.  Luke Carrick outfits/guides there as well or at least used to. I don't know thier permit boundaries.

The 2015 fires burned very hot on Moore Flats, burned north and crossed Crooked Creek near 2nd Creek.  The fire didn't cross the Smooth Ridge trail south of Oregon Butte until you get close to Huckleberry.  Most of the fire was in the West unit and/or south of Crooked Creek.  From advice on a recent post I started and from other reading, it appears that trail crews have cleared many miles of trails in the central and southern portion that were in the burn.

I always thought I'd hunt from near Weller Butte/Smooth Ridge if I drew that tag. With the fire burning so much of Moore Flats, I'd have to see how well the grass came back.  If the grass and forbes came back strong without noxious weeds, that area might be full of elk.  I've read that biologists believe the fire will be good for the elk herd if that happens.

Hope you get other advice on the hunt. Good luck.

It's a rifle tag. He left out how weather is a huge factor in this hunt. Fog is horrible that time of yr. Your worst enemy.

Consider hiring Waldron.  He and his guides have the scouting down solid and would get a guy on the bulls while providing info on the options.

The east is a great unit. I'll look over my maps and get back to you on areas that held bulls in the past. Make sure you plan for sun to snow. And get in shape. You will probably be packing his bull uphill to the trail.

Did you have a mount done on him?

I did, but unfortunately I have no place to mount it. My walls are not tall enough in my house. Need to upgrade soon for the sole purpose of mounting him. lol
