45 degree red dots
« on: July 13, 2017, 11:55:27 AM »
Do any of you guys run off set red dots?  Do you use it for hunting?  I was thinking of putting one on my coyote rig at an angle for close shots or moving shots.  What are your thoughts and takes?
The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.

Just run a low power variable like a 1-4 or 1.5-6 with an aluminated dot and an FOV between 60' and 100', keep it dialed down to the bottom end and you can shoot it like a red dot with both eyes open.  If one hangs up out a ways you have time to crank it up in power if you need it.

Here's a a 1-4 Leupold on a drilling, enough FOV to shoot birds on the wing or running coyotes with the shotgun barrel and it will still shoot sub MOA groups at 200 yards with the rifle barrel.

Same size Leupold on a combo gun 12ga/22 Savage Highpower.  After rolling one with the shotgun at 40 yards he ran straight at me at a dead run, killed him at 6' with the rifle barrel.  Set up like this it will still deliver sub MOA groups at 300 yards.

My bolt guns carry 1.5-6x40mm scopes and work about the same

I think it boils down to your personal choice.
My neighbors wife bought him a Colt M4, with every available option known to man mounted on it. Took what was (at the time) a $1300 Colt M4, to over $2500.00.
He loves it. I can't stand to shoot the frankenbeast, LOL

I run a Bushnell CQTS 1x32 Red Dot on my S&W M&P15, co-witnessed with my BUIS. And a Burris 1-4X MTAC on my Colt. Two separate functions one is a home defense setup, the other is a SHTF, varmint, etc...

Last week I shot another colt with a Burris Fullfield TAC30 1-4x24 Riflescope w/Fastfire 3 red dot mounted on top.

There may be more elegant ways to do this with better options than the Fastfire 3. I was pleasantly surprised at how fast acquisition was going back and forth between the two, with no change in your weapon position (do not have to turn it 45 degrees sideways)

If I was going to mount a Red Dot with my scope, this is probably the way I would go.

Ive used one on my buddies rig. takes some getting used to and it adds a bit of "unbalanced" weight depending on your set up.

Personally I plan on doing that on a 18" build down the road but its purely because I think it looks cool lol.
