300 Win Mag Ammo
« on: July 19, 2017, 02:28:17 PM »
I was lucky enough to win a sweet new rifle set up! It's a browning x bolt hells canyon in 300 win mag and a vortex razor scope. I have never shot a 300 win mag nor do I know much about this caliber. I plan on using the rifle for this upcoming bear season and I will use my trusty 25-06 for deer. What ammo would you reccomend, I am somewhat nervous about the kick of the 300 win mag...

Horrible gun, kicks like a mule, will blacken your eye and shoulder. No good ammo out there. Inaccurate and won't group.
Sell it to me or trade me my xcr 300 wm!

Other than that, I have no useful info for you. I reload for mine and run 208gr amax. I don't know what to advise for factory shelf ammo.

For less recoil go with 150 grain bullets. They will be fast, so a copper bullet is what I would recommend. Barnes, Nosler Etip, Hornady GMX.

That's an awesome rifle.  Bobcat has some good advice for you.  If nothing else start with the light stuff and work your way up, if you want to try heavier stuff later once you're acclimated.

Also, check to see if you won the "Speed" model or the "Long Range" model of the Hells Canyon  The Long Range model is about 3/4 pound heavier and that helps to tame recoil some.  Put a ammo sleeve on the butt with 8 rounds in it, and that'll also help tame the recoil (adds another 1/2 lb).  If it were me, I'd try to work my way up to a 190g Nosler ABLR or Barnes LRX.

And 150 should be plenty for a black bear correct?

The factory Barnes 150g TTSX ammo is over 3500 ft-lbs energy at the muzzle.  More than enough for black bear.

I have been shooting 300wm for many many years, the recoil is overrated. A well stocked rifle kicks "less" "more comfort" than a badly stocked rifle regardless of cartridge. Hold it properly, shoot it first standing up. You will be fine and have a fine rifle!! One thing is in my experience it is deadly on game. I shoot 180 grain

 :yeah:

The difference between a 30-06 that everyone seems to be able to shoot and a 300 win mag is no where near enough to warrant all the "oh the recoil" that seems to be propagated readily.

I would rather shoot a well made 300 win mag over a 30-06 with a crap plastic stock any day.

A Browning X-bolt Hells Canyon, is a quality rifle.

My .300 is one of my main battle rifles.  Bear, elk and last year a moose.  The recoil is not bad at all.  I shoot several hundred or more rounds a year through it.  Don't worry about it.  I reload everything from 150's to 200's.  That is a great rifle, probably my next purchase.

If your worried about recoil, take it to Benchmark barrels and have a brake installed.

Those Browning Hells Canyon 300WM already have a muzzle brake.

I've had great results with Barnes 165gr. The recoil shouldn't be bad with that rifle, and if it is get yourself a lead sled. Plus, recoil won't be felt if you're firing at an animal.

It comes with a break luckily. I had shoulder surgery last year so I always get nervous!

Perfect! I love my 25-06! But this will be a fun new gun, I just hope I can now get a bear with it! Who knows maybe gohunt.com will send me another one if I tag a bear with the rifle they gave me!
