Goes crazy
« on: June 28, 2017, 05:19:18 PM »
Anyone got any pointers for getting a dog to calm down when he thinks he's gonna get in the truck and go somewhere? My lab goes nuts when he thinks we r getting ready to go somewhere and it's starting to drive me nuts the way he acts

I guess the only input I have is to not encourage the behavior.  A lot of its natural for any of us though so you really cant blame them. :chuckle:

My dads Cocker was that way until she died (13 years old), even if I just took the shotguns out to clean them she would go to the door and whine, but she was the best quail hunting dog we ever had too.

All I need to do is pick up the keys and my wife is there jumping up and down. "Can I go? Buy me something pretty? Where you off to? Get me chocolate!" At least you can teach your dogs some commands. Count yourself lucky to have beings that are so excited to go wherever you go.

Start taking the dog to the drive through car wash every time you go out.

I am assuming he is young. My dog did the same thing when he was young. Now he just waits by the door if he thinks I am going out.

My best advice would be to work on extinguishing the behavior. Something about what you do tells the dog that you are potentially getting ready to go somewhere. What you need to do is do that thing constantly, but never actually go anywhere.

 :yeah:

We ad the same issue with our GSP.  We started to randomly act like we are going somewhere, get keys, put on coat and shoes, etc. then we'd just sit on the couch or go about our day.  We use the same routine over and over, regardless of leaving or not.  After a couple weeks he started to calm down and just watch us.  Worked really well.
Now, if the guns come out, that's a different story.
