Trapping 101
« on: July 21, 2017, 12:33:30 AM »
I have never trapped anything besides rats, mice and moles. I know nothing about trapping and would like to learn a few things to see if it is something I would be interested in. I don't know much about trapping, but it seems like an excellent way to bring home dinner when hunting/scouting. What should I read, watch or who should I talk to?

Any books or info would be great.

Thanks for looking

First, I'd just browse around in the trapping threads on here. Maybe check out some of the trapping pages on facebook too if you have an account. Also, there are lots of trapping books available online (probably not available in stores in this state).
Then, if you seem to like trapping, you should join the Washington State Trappers Association and get to know some other trappers in your area. Perhaps one of them would be nice enough to take you out and teach you some things.

If you like beaver meat then you might be able to bring home some dinners, but I wouldn't count on eating too many other trapped critters (Possum, Skunk, Otter).... :EAT:

There are a ton of books and videos on trapping available. Trouble is very few are geared towards cage trapping which is what you will be doing in WA. If you buy a book or video make sure it is about cage trapping. Would not hurt to do a search on youtube with cage trapping. A lot of duds on there but anything by cagingbobcats, or Kirk DeKalb would be good. Also saw some stuff by wolfernation worth watching.
Best way though is come to our Rendezvous. Some very good demos to be seen and you can take the Trapper Ed class while you are there. We run a bunch of demos just for the Trapper Ed students so great for a beginner. Plus you can look at traps, ask questions and buy some trapping equipment if you decide this is for you.
If not, dinner is free and you can help us drink the iced beer that goes at the beginning of the auction.

If you are contemplating trapping for the supper table I would concentrate on looking at beaver, muskrat, raccoon, bobcat, maybe nutria.

Beaver and bobcat are excellent table fair  the new trappers pamphlet even has a few recipes for the edible fur bearers
