Hi all, I'm brand new to muzzleloader and looking for some opinions on a solid muzzleloader for deer and elk to start with.  I've done some research on them but would like some input from some experienced hunters.  Thanks

I have a Vortek Ultralight LDR and I'm very happy with it. I pair it with 100gr pellets and Honady SST. Which ever you choose just.make sure you practice with.

I agree with LingCod- whatever you choose, practice with it.  And be obsessive about cleaning it.  Clean the breech and barrel with standard muzzy solvents or Windex, a copper bristle brush attachment, and lots of shotgun patches (my preference).  Clean the trigger assembly in a well-ventilated area with brake cleaner once or twice a year.  Think about putting a peep sight on whatever muzzy you get.

My first muzzy was a Knight Bighorn, and I still love that rifle.  Northwest-legal, easy to clean, light enough to carry around but heavy enough to help with steadiness.  Have taken eight deer with it, and still hunt with it occasionally.  I know I am biased, but anything by Knight is a solid hunting muzzy.

Good luck, QuackAttack- have fun.

Agree, practice, practice, and practice.  Clean and then clean again, although I have inlines and cap locks I think the cap locks are easier to clean.  That said I find myself hunting with my Knights due to nasty conditions the past couple years.

There are a lot of good guns available.
