My Stepson Got His First Deer Today:

I first came into my son's life 7 years ago when he was 7 years old.  As I slowly gained his respect it was a gradual and careful process toward teaching him work ethic and other values important to me.  Since the beginning I have always offered for him to hunt with me, but I didn't sugar coat it... I explained that sometimes it is miserable, sometimes it is a lot of work, etc.  He is more of a "video gamer type", and other than going on a couple of hunts with me has always respectfully declined.

When I asked him if he wanted to hunt this year he said yes!  I was excited to say the least.  I had a good spot picked out where I was consistently seeing numerous small bucks.  We set up camp the day before opener and I was much more excited than him.  Opening morning we were approaching the location where I had imagined him shooting his first deer and... BOOM... a shot from above us.  Side Note: the shot was a 50ish year old man who shot a small spike instead of letting his son shoot it instead.  The next four days we saw only two does!

We returned home defeated and worked hard at finding him a buck every chance we had.  We even hunted on the family farm when I was feeling a bit desperate.  After numerous days of hunting and seeing nothing we decided to try a completely new location this morning.  I was getting very anxious because I really wanted him to have a good experience.  I kept thinking about how if he didn't have some kind of action that he would decline next year to spend more time on the games.

At 9am this morning we started through our second clearcut of the morning.  We walked slowly while glassing regularly.  Then it happened: I said, there is a buck.  He didn't believe me at first.  It took a while for him to find it and it was on the edge of thick reprod.  I began to get the fever as I thought it was going to get away without him even seeing it.  Finally he found it and placed a perfect shot at 175 yards.  The buck didn't go more than 20 feet.

I couldn't be more proud:
On Thursday we had Parent-Teacher conferences.  He had straight A's and each of his 6 teachers took the time to explain how impressed they were with his level of respect, intellect, dedication, and his wonderful personality.  I was a very proud person to say the least.... but now... WOW I am so proud of him.  What a great day!

Lesson Learned: oh wait... I learned this lesson many times over again... I need to get in shape before hunting season!

Added Bonus:  He killed his first buck with a SBR... I should send the picture to Hillary and all her friends.

I saw him dropping in his tracks before the recoil hit me if that is what you mean. Maybe you are making fun of his wilting rack like all the other deer used to do to him.

:chuckle: :chuckle: A little Viagra would have done him wonders.    He's a cool deer for sure.

Definitely qualified for the “salamander neck”. Big body on that buck. Not a fun pack out.
