With only 2 days to hunt, I was fortunate to locate and take this mature WA Whitey.

My sons Blacktail

He sure knows how to get it done. Every year he kills a nice buck. Congrats to him.

This deer’s story dates back to 2007, when I first saw what I believe to be his dad. I had an opportunity to take his dad back then, but chose not to because he was with 8-10 does and I wanted him to pass on his genetics. I had also been solo hunting and didn’t want to end my trip before I got to hunt with my dad, which had been a tradition we started when I was 5 years old. I passed on him again in 2008 for the same reason and just couldn’t connect in 2009. Then one of his offspring appeared in 2011. Again, with 8-10 doe in tow and on a solo hunt/scouting I passed. 2012, while on a hunt with my dad I spotted him on a ridge, but just couldn’t get a shot off before he disappeared. That was my last year hunting with my dad as he passed away that winter. 2013, while on a solo hunt, I got the biggest buck of my life and on a cold November day, I could feel the warmth of my dad’s embrace and knew that was our final hunt together. Fast forward to 2017. My 7 year old daughter has been bugging me for months. “When are we going hunting? When are we going hunting?” She was excited beyond belief. So I decided to set up a double stand on the same ridge my dad and I last hunted in 2012. I hadn’t hunted it since, but had a feeling it would be a good spot. Our deer season finally arrived, and my daughter and my hunting tradition had started. It was our first morning and we got to the stand early. An hour had passed and no sign of deer. I gave a few blind calls, but nothing responds. A half hour passes and I can hear my daughter’s tummy growl. I ask if she is doing ok and she asks when we can go back for breakfast and why there aren’t any deer. I tell her we can go back in just a little while and give out a few more blind calls. Nothing responds and 15 minutes later I can see my daughter is starting to shiver. I tell her I am going to try one last call sequence and then we can go back. I went through a full sequence of grunts and doe bleats. “RRRRrrr”. A faint response back in the distance. “You hear that, Kenley? That was a buck” “I heard it dad.” Now she has perked up. I did another full call sequence. “RRRrrr RRRrrr RRRrrr” another response back. “Dad, he’s getting closer.” I gave a few more grunts and another doe bleat. No, this buck has taken it hook, line, and sinker. He is grunting every half second and charging in. I stopped all calls as not to give away our location. We see him for the first time, passing through the young firs. Ears pinned back and pissed a rival buck has moved in on his doe. He is just about to step into my shooting lane, when he stops in the thick stuff. A few minutes pass and I give one more bleat. He steps out and I don’t need optics to tell that he’s a shooter. He turns and starts walking towards us. I raise my rifle and wait for him to turn broadside. Coming in head down, I can see his rack through the scope and can’t help to notice he is a good buck. I also see that if a place my shot just in front of his shoulders, I will take out his spinal column and heart at the same time. He picks his head back up and the next time he puts it down, “boom”. Clean, ethical shot and he is out before he hits the ground. My daughter says “Oh, I’m kind of sad for him, but happy to because now we have meat for the freezer.” I told her, “That’s exactly how you should feel. I feel sad every time I take an animal, but am thankful for the meat we have been blessed with.” And the Lord has blessed us this year. The same ridge my dad and my tradition ended on, my daughter and I forged our new tradition. My little huntress already can’t wait for next deer season.

Thank you. Yeah, that was always the best part about hunting with my dad. Just the good quality time together in the outdoors. I’m glad I get to start that with my kids now.
